I placed the order through TRAK on 10/2019 and received the kayak on 7/2022. I’ve used it around 20 times total, only for day paddles. I’ve thoroughly rinsed (with fresh water via a portable sprayer) and dried it after each paddle. It’s an impressive boat, but it’s uncomfortably small for me (6’ 3”, 200 lb, US 11 shoe). I think someone 5’ 10” or less would be very comfortable in it.
Note that a US 11 shoe works, but I feel it’s the max (and slightly uncomfortable). I would recommend a US 10 or smaller shoe for practical use (e.g., toes not up against the kayak skin). The biggest problem with my height is that I cannot sit in the seat and then bring my legs in and out (the cockpit opening is too short for that). Therefore, I have to sit on the back edge of the coaming and then slide in with my legs out straight. This works best when launching from a boat ramp, with a paddle behind me (out to one side) for support.
However, I believe this method is what caused the small abrasion on the stern keel (shown in the last photo). Therefore, if possible, I recommend launching from a dock, or going deeper into the water (i.e., float the entire waterline) when launching from a boat ramp or beach. The boat skin is not fragile, but it's also not bullet proof (like I was expecting). Therefore, it’s not going to be a huge deal if you drag it over sand a little bit, but in hindsight, don’t every drag this (or any) high end kayak. If I was more careful and picked it up always, it would still be in mint condition.
Overall, do not buy this boat if you are my height (6’ 3”). As a one-size-fits-all product, this shouldn’t be a surprise. I’m selling it because I just ordered an 18’ single-piece NDK composite kayak. I had to buy the largest model available to be able to comfortably sit in the seat and get my legs in and out (i.e., 99% of sea kayaks simply have small cockpit openings…it’s just a fact). All in all, I cared for the TRAK as best as I could.
However, I want to make sure I disclose any/all issues, so there’s no surprises. Please see the photos. Some of the foam on the thigh braces has peeled off. These are attached with two screws, and I assume you can buy new ones from TRAK. However, I recall some slight manufacturing issue with the metal grommets in the coming.
I can’t recall the details. Maybe slightly stripped or misaligned threads in the inserts? I was able to install/fully seat the thigh braces fine, but I wouldn’t want to take them off/on too many times (or move the positions). After a 3 year wait, I wasn’t about to send anything back for a trivial issue. Overall, I recommend just leaving the thigh braces alone.
They are fine as-is. On day one, I tried using the sea sock and pinched in the jack and caused a tear in the sea sock. I repaired it per the manufacture’s guidance. It’s now fine as is. However, I never use the sea sock anyway.
I’m too tall, but overall, it’s just another thing to rinse and dry off, so it’s just an extra hassle. Note, you can buy a new one from TRAK for $149 (i.e., if the repair bothers you). Lastly, there is the wear on the stern keel. There are three layers of rubber welded together at the keel. In this spot, I wore through the outer layer.
I recently spoke with TRAK. They told me to simply apply a thin layer of Aquaseal and then just maintain that going forward (i.e., just don’t allow any further damage and it is fine). I already purchased the Aquaseal and applied a nice thick coat. I came out pretty good. See the last photo for the result.
The TRAK is currently $3,850. I knocked it down to $2,500 for the used condition and minor damage. If you have any questions, please message me. I fear shipping the kayak will cost a lot of money. The purchaser will have to pay for the shipping.
I am in the New England, USA area and am willing to arrange for an in-person sale. In that case, if you are interested, I’d be happy to show you how to set it up/take it apart. However, I’m not willing to set up test fittings/paddles for potential buyers that are not 100% interested. That would be too time-consuming for me. Due to storage space, I store the kayak in its disassembled/packed up state.
I’m hoping to find someone that already wants to buy a TRAK and doesn’t want to wait for the long lead time and wants to save a little money (vs. Buying new). Thank you.
