Any questions Dave 0phone A review:This review refers to the HTP plastic boat, though I believe Prijon can supply glass versions. With regard to construction, the boat is beautiful to look at, the plastic nice and rigid, and the lines sharp. The tri-hedral hull design means 2 chines running along the middle half of the boat. Fittings are well made and fastened. The cockpit has taken lessons from WW boats, and results in a comfortable but secure fit, which adds real confidence.
Storage is good for 7 day trips but probably too small for longer expeditions. The hatches are neoprene with hard shell covers, bulkheads are foam glassed to the hull, no signs of water penetration. As with all plastic boats the weight is there but acceptable. On the water the Barracuda's stability is strange, it feels quite twitchy but accidental capsizes are rare, when they do happen rolling can be performed without too much effort. Once you start to travel the initial instability leaves and paddling is pretty much effortless, so much so that it is not until paddle with other boats that you realise how quickly you're travelling. Turning requires leaning skills, but it can be turned 180 degrees with just 2 sweep strokes.A word of warning, the Barracuda is effected by following seas and winds.
Weathercocking becomes evident in F4+ winds, on one unfortunate trip with a crosswind and sea coming from the aft quarter, I tried paddling straight with no corrective strokes or leans, within 8 strokes I had turned almost 180 degrees. If you paddle in anything but mild conditions get the rudder option, even just dropping the rudder acts as a skeg and cures the problem. Having said all that I have never paddled a sea kayak that can sit in the surf and soup so well, the desire of the bow to point into the sea means exiting surf shores is straight forward and timing you're landing is in your hands not the oceans.Overall I'm very content with my purchase, the Barracuda can't compete with the best glass boats but it is better than many glass boats twice it's price. A boat for intermediate paddlers and beyond, just don't forget the rudder. On 04-Oct-20 at 18:53:20 BST, seller added the following information: Review :Bought a used 2004 Barracuda a month or two ago for racing (or at least practicing) on rivers here in Texas. I've made two different 23 mile runs on the upper Guadalupe that included 55 sets of rapids and or falls.
I've made two differnt runs on the upper San Marcos that included Cottenseed rapids and a lot of trees blocking the whole river. Like I said I bought this boat to have something bomb proof to practice on while there are so many rocks and other hazards exposed on the rivers. I'm thrilled with my purchase. The boat handles beautifully in all the rapids and even going over 2' waterfalls. In places where there were too many rocks to use the rudder or to stick the paddle in for effective steering a simple twist at the waist and the boat edges right through the sharp turns.
I too have a Touryak and this boat is far faster and more agile. The secondary stability is incredible. Considering that I knew full well I was buying a plastic boat it has done all I expected. The only complaint I have is that being 6' tall with a 34" inseam, I can just barely get my last foot in the cockpit after sitting down. But, I can get it in!
The other complaint which again was a "known" is that it weighs 60#s. So, I'm saving up for the day I can afford and justify a composite kayak. But that purchase wouldn't be able to handle the rocks and boulders any better than my Wenonah Voyager (Kevlar Ultra-light.) Bottom line is that this is the best value, bomb-proof, fastest boat I could find and I love it. BTW, my 14 year old that seldom agrees to go loves it too and he took it through 11 miles of the San Marcos including rapids as well.
