All aspects of our designs are motivated by the intention that the end product will bring pleasure and enhance our customer's lives. You will discover:*increased into wind performance*increased down wind performance*increased safety with the EZ furl system. Reduce your sail size down to zero in seconds*improved user friendliness with the tapered step down mast that reduces knock down and capsize effect.*cost effective by buying direct from the manufacturer.
When I took a look at designing a kayak sail I tried out various designs and one of them was the Hobie. I immediately liked it but quickly discovered a significant problem, and that was the sail was likely to capsize you in even very mild conditions and the sailing required constant control and yet lacked power in light conditions. It was not restful to say the least. Many Hobie kayak sailors resort to having outriggers which is an additional expense. I made a series of break throughs, calling on many years of design experience in hanggliding.
The first break through changed the game plan big time. The combination of the four stage step down mast and careful sail cut gives us a set up so easy to sail, a complete novice to sailing can take to the water and be sailing in minutes. What is more, the ease of use has enabled us to significantly increase the size of the sail by over 30%. The next break through was the EZ furl system. This meant that the sail could be reduced in size effortlessly.
This dramatically improved the safety aspect and broadened the scope of conditions that can be sailed in comfortably. Now the package is fully vindicated by those that have been using this kit. Richard Edser writes:I recently tried out Bill's S.T.A.R sail system on my sport Hobie kayak. I was amazed at the increase performance it gave me particularly to windward and the sheer ease in which the reefing system worked which is of great importance to such a small boat. It gave me a great sense of security enabling me to sail my boat in almost any weather conditions.
It was very easy to set up and took only seconds to rig . I would recommend this system for all kayakers who want to try some quality sailing. Another customer writes:Being a keen kayak fisherman with my Hobie Outback and living near a river, the wind has always been my "enemy". More so since now living on the lake. No more!
Now I long for a mild breeze to fill my new sail courtesy of Bill Pain. Bill has designed a fantastic and customisable, transparent and flexible sail which is very adaptable and forgiving, transforming the Hobie into a wonderful, safe and easy introduction to the world of sailing.Bill spared no effort in helping me get set up and his willingness to customise and adapt was legendary. The sail looks magnificent on the Hobie and is exceptionally easy for a novice sailor to learn to use and very quickly enjoy. Much to my surprise and despite a wide variety of wind strengths and directions, the sail has always been very controllable and I have yet to capsise the craft despite being a rank beginner to sailing. Also to my surprise no outriggers have been needed so far as the sail is so easily controllable.
Sailing rudder will be needed to fully exploit its potential. Now i can look forward to taking the Hobie out in all conditions and even look forward to a bit of wind. Priceless. John V And here is another. This customer also had the original sail kit that comes from Hobie: Just spent 4 days sailing the kayak ...the sail is perfect its the right size and the right shape. Even though you were right about being a bit unshaped in close haul a simple twist takes care of that, and it allows for a better baggy shape for down wind .. in light winds I can still make very good way far better than the tide ripping the other way , and in strong wind its just an easy pull of the furling rope even under load to adjust , no need to luff to furl at all I just simply take most of the load off the mainsheet .
