I’ve owned this Klepper for two years and used it very little. I also have an Expedition model and I don’t really need two Kleppers so I’m letting this one go. This kayak breaks down into two bags that you can easily fit inside your car. With a little practice, you can assemble it in 15 minutes. This Klepper is in exceptional shape.
It has seen almost no use during its lifetime. The skin is soft and supple and the frame is like new. The frame is made of ash and birch. The hull is Hypalon, and the Egyptian cotton canvas deck is a tight weave that is breathable but waterproof. There are a couple of small imperfections that I’ve photographed and noted (see link to 58 photos below).
Kleppers have full-length air sponsons built into the skin that you inflate after assembly. These are in great condition with no leaks. When they are inflated they tighten and shape the skin on the frame, but more importantly, they give an amazing stability to the kayak. Kleppers are very hard to capsize and essentially unsinkable due to the sponsons. On the deck, the two carrying handles need some work (this was a weak point on most vintage Kleppers).
On the hull, there is one tiny cut, maybe half an inch long, that looks so clean it must have been made accidentally by a cutter when the kayak was packed for shipping. I haven't patched it because I was going to put keel strips on and they would have covered it completely. I just stuck a small piece of duct tape over it when paddling. Also, the end cap on the bow has a tear at the bottom. Glue it back, or if you're a perfectionist, remove and replace it.
One of the carrying bags has a small area where the cloth is bad but that can be repaired (I'm including some extra canvas), otherwise they are perfect. The original spraydeck and two sprayskirts are included, and as is normal at this age, they need to be re-glued in some areas. KlepperAmerica.com or LongHaulFoldingKayaks.com can make these repairs at a very reasonable price. Just send them the skin. This Klepper is the Mercedes Benz of kayaks, it rows beautifully, has an 840-pound payload, and with minimal care will outlive its owner(s).
KlepperAmerica.com sells this Aerius II new for $5163, and can still supply every spare part for this timeless beauty, including the skin. She is easy to handle and paddles like a dream with one or two paddlers. Additionally, several sail kits are available for Kleppers. Other than the small imperfections, this kayak is as good as new, at one third the price of a new Klepper. Dl=0 Shipping and insurance will probably cost between $200 and $250 to most parts of the country via FedEx Ground. Thanks for looking!
