Hi, I'm selling this 1960s Klepper Aerius folding kayak. As you can see in the photos the wood frame is in good condition. It's the whole kit, including the original bags, sail, mast, skin, paddles, rudder, etc. There are some flaws which I will list below. I've tried to include the pictures that show the worst problems so you know what you're in for.
I am happy to answer any questions and send you my other photos. In fact, I hope you ask me questions. I have about 40 photos, but can only list 12 here. A friend gave it to me because he's pushing 80 years old and doesn't want it anymore. I can't really use it either.
It has all sat in a storage closet for decades and has been exposed to some moisture. Not much, but enough to do some damage. Some of the canvas (e.g. Bags, top of skin) has some mildew, but I think the bags can be used. I don't know if the mildew stains can be washed out.
Much of the rubber is shot (e.g. The inflatable rubber seats and back pads), and the skin has a couple holes and a straight seam tear that's over 6 inches long. Might need a whole new skin; I don't know. I've fixed worse on an old inflatable Zodiac rubber boat, but that's me and I'm handy. I assembled the frame to make sure everything was there, but I didn't try to put the frame inside the current skin, so it might not be fixable.
Dimensions of assembled frame: 202" (16.8 feet) long, 28" wide, 18" high. I found assembly instructions for a newer version of the same model online. It's a pdf that I can email to you. Check KlepperAmerica's website for some parts and skins at full price, and search online to see the other aftermarket skins that are available for the Klepper Aerius model. There are four canvas bags and the skin, so five separate groups of things.
classifieds board won't let me get a shipping estimate for separate packages and classifieds board won't allow something so heavy in the shipping estimator. So I've estimated the shipping charge based on what other completed sales have shipped for on classifieds board: $150-$200. I've tried to make the shipping estimate on the high side at $200. The actual final shipping cost will likely be different — I will refund you if the shipping is actually lower. I'm an honest seller; see my feedback.
I'd try to use FedEx Ground first, but could do UPS if you prefer. Might require two shipments... dunno, never shipped something this big before. If you're in the Washington, DC, area you're welcome to come pick it up. Here is a list of all the parts and descriptions of their condition. There was some dirt on the frame so I rinsed the whole thing down with a hose after assembly, which is why it appears wet: - Frame: overall very good.
Click connectors all seem good. I put it together without much difficulty. Some stamped numbers indicating frame pieces are hard to see but they're there. Missing one rubber holder for a frame pole, it must have cracked and fallen off. Another rubber holder is cracked.
There is a crack in one floor/bottom frame piece (4th picture, very visible due to water/rinsing). Seems okay, but you might want to replace that wood panel. It's held together with screws, so seems very fixable. Rubber inflatable seats and back rests are rotten. You'd need to come up with a replacement solution for those.
The rear back rest panel has broken off from the cross-piece (1st picture, it's hanging). The screws pulled out of the flat panel. Frame canvas bag is good. Not much mildew, but a little. - Paddles: excellent.
No visible cracks etc. Still have the Klepper decals. - Sail and mast: appear very good. Sail appears good. Not mildewed.
- Skin: needs some repairs, but probably usable. No promises though. I saw at least one small puncture that had a patch, and that patch has since separated off. Probably more little holes like that. There's an over 6" straight crack in the bottom.
Might have been repaired before and the repair has since failed. Some of the "bumper" material at the stern has separated and fallen off (pictured). Top canvas skirt is mildewed but not torn (pictured). I don't know if the inflatable side bumper things are airtight. Inflation hoses look bad.
Overall, I think it could be fixed, but no promises. It would take some work. Please contact me so I can send you all the pictures. - Rubbery top spray cover: very good. Seems very usable.
- Also has two small fabric zipper bags for little parts. One is stained and mildewed, one is good. Also includes a little bag with skin repair material. Don't know how usable it is. Thanks for looking.
Again, please ask questions. I want the buyer to be happy and know everything.
