This Kayak Receives 5 Star Reviews Across the Board Learn more at www.deltakayaks.com The Delta 16 kayak combines some of the latest great ideas in sea kayak design with the tried-and-true characteristics of an elegant tourer. It’s best suited to intermediate paddlers who want a light, nimble kayak that still knows how to go the distance. This DELTA 16 caters to paddlers “who have been waiting for a full-figured British style design with more dry storage typical of North American designs.” At 16 feet long and 22 inches wide, the Delta 16 feels sporty but packs an impressive 55 gallons dry storage into three voluminous hatches—50 percent more than many similarly proportioned Brit boats. AN ELEGANT TOURING KAYAK While some aspects of the design are informed by the Atlantic approach—the shallow-V, soft chined hull and optional skeg, for example—the Delta 16 kayak shows a healthy dose of Delta’s West Coast roots, albeit in a trimmer package than the standard Pacific tourer.
The front and rear decks are high to aid expedition capacity, a rudder or Skeg comes standard and the seat is outfitted with an adjustable-height backrest. Even with the front deck pod (more on that below), the cockpit is comfortable for paddlers up to six feet tall. Trimming on the fly is easy with the sliding seat. Hip padding is non-existent so smaller paddlers should invest in Delta’s optional hip pad fit kit, or an hour shaping custom inserts. The Delta 16 moves the day hatch from behind the cockpit to the front deck for easier, drier access.
Even better, it’s watertight and roomy enough for more than just a PB&J sandwich, easily swallowing a paddling jacket, SLR camera or even 10-liter dry bag. On-water acceleration is quick for a 16-foot boat, thanks to a sharp entry point low on the bow. Combined with moderate rocker, the hull tracks well even without deploying the skeg or rudder. DELTA KAYAK’S WORLD CLASS ATTENTION TO DETAIL Unique hatch covers use quarter-turn locking knobs, bungees and integrated rubber rim gaskets for a seal that’s dry and user-friendly, even with numb fingers. Standard features reflect Delta’s commitment to detailing: self-rescue straps and easy-draining curved bulkhead behind the cockpit, full decklines and leashed hatches.
The optional skeg is deployed with a string to eliminate cable kink. Molded-in cable routings are rudder ready. Limitless possibilities! This is a wonderfully versatile, high performance kayak with features that enhance the experience of being out on the water!
Every time I’m on the water, whether a nearby lake or the inter coastal, I feel really fortunate to have this boat! I’ve paddled a number of recreational and touring kayaks, always moving towards higher performance as I spend more time on the water, and this boat has launched me to another level. This kayak is nimble, and rewards edging and braced turns, and is something of a revelation in those regards. While maybe not a racing craft, at 22 inches wide my Delta 16 is the first kayak I’ve ever paddled that keeps up with and surpasses wind driven swells, providing me an extra boost when traveling with the white caps. The same is true of ski boat wakes made by some of the heavier tows on the lakes near my home.
Speeding along the face of a wake or a swell is an amazing feeling! I’m sure that there are other kayaks that promote this kind of fun on Florida waters, but the Delta 16 has additional features that work really well for me. The hard-capped day hatch fore of the cockpit is super convenient! Great for lunch, or binoculars or a camera, the roomy hatch bulkhead allows easy and dry access without me having to remove my spray skirt. The patented deck rigging makes securing a paddle, while attaching a spray skirt or taking photos, very easy.
The hard hatches seal well (make sure they’re fully snapped down if you plan to roll and roll!), and are relatively gentle on my slightly arthritic hands compared to rubber hatches. And the storage capacity of this boat is impossible to beat! Island camping is my passion, and the roomy bulkheads of this kayak allow me to take anything I can imagine needing for multi day trips! The rear hatch is large, making loading and unloading a breeze. Clever engineering utilizes the hard hatches to stiffen the boat, allowing for the bigger hatch!
How cool is that! Oh yeah, and this kayak weighs 12 pounds less than my previous, shorter touring kayak, which makes a huge difference car-topping at the end of a long day on open water. BTW, it’s a gorgeous boat. I mean, I have never received so many questions and compliments about a kayak, which is hardly the point. Just sayin’.
Overall, a feature packed, nimble and efficient boat that invites the intermediate kayaker (me) to develop her or his skills to the next level and beyond. The horizon is the limit with this kayak.
