Feathercraft folding kayaks don’t often come up for sale anymore. Owners are hoarding them ever since their creator, Doug Simpson hung up his paddles. I own 3, but I’m letting my least used one go. Here is a Teal Feathercraft Kahuna (standard width cockpit, not the “big” version) that isn't spending enough time in the water. The boat kit is relatively future-proofed.
For starters, it is made with the post-1999 skin materials (serial number confirms), so hull patch material (heaven forbid you should need it) is a just a call to Feathercraft’s repair service or NRS. I'm not the original owner, but I have carefully maintained, properly cleaned, and stored it indoors during my tenure. There are a few light marks on the skin (pictured) I unnecessarily and somewhat messily reinforced with Aquaseal, but no patches or punctures to the hull at all. The AquaSeal was applied excessively around small dings and the gold marks were so I could see what I was doing. I inflated both the kayak sponsons in the skin and left them overnight.
Air held. Since the sad *folding* of the Feathercraft company (sorry, I’ll see myself out), I have been gathering spares. Included is an extra coaming - inarguably the best spare part to have. I have flown with this boat and the wear to the backpack proves it (shoulder straps and waist belt were tucked away and are unharmed by the baggage carousel, so it remains quite usable, but I would replace the side carry strap at some point). Despite my worries of destruction by the airlines, the coaming only once suffered a little chip that I filled in with a drop or two of epoxy.
In the verbiage of Pyrex collectors, it is a fleabite. The spare is unused and undamaged. Also included are spare foot pedals to control the optional and included, add-on factory installed Feathercraft rudder. A nice bonus on a day where the winds, waves, and/or currents are not cooperating. Feathercraft was well known for their rudder quality, and you will find them on many non-folding kayaks made by other boat builders.
The sea sock is included, but it’s delaminating (same thing happens to nylon tents, raincoats, etc). It is optional for casual paddling, and could be re-coated for about $20 in materials if you want to. I am including one Feathercraft sprayskirt. It is the standard nylon skirt that is also flaking a bit and could be recoated or seam sealed. I also have a brand new with tags Brooks (Feathercraft branded) 3.5mm neoprene skirt for cold weather paddling that I'm selling separately, ask if you are interested.
This kit comes with Feathercraft skin patches, a new Aquaseal repair kit, and printed assembly instruction manual (sorry I can't toss in a time machine to make the original instructions on VHS tape useful). A PDF version is also available in the archive on the Feathercraft website in case you want to keep the manual on your phone or computer. An assembly video is also online as well. Optional NRS float bags are included, but will need to be resealed around the valve stem. I never used them, so the rubber degraded over time.
For the sale, I glued them back with AquaSeal, but that is the wrong adhesive and it isn't holding. If you use the seasock and/or skirt, you really don’t need the floats. I will give the skin a once-over with 303 Aerospace treatment, and lube up all the frame parts with BoShield prior to shipping, so it will be ready to put in the water. Just add a PFD and paddle and you are good to go! I am not separating elements of this bundled kit.
It is all or nothing. Frankly since Feathercraft is gone, you would be foolish to turn down the spares and accessories. After recently going through a very messy sale here on classifieds board, I have some fine print/disclaimers/terms & conditions that I am now adding to my listings. This is common sense and in-line with classifieds board’s policies.
