Offered here is a professionally built Chesapeake Light Craft CLC 17LT (meaning 17’ Light Touring) sea kayak. This has been an absolutely wonderful boat—probably the most comfortable and best all-around kayak I have owned over the course of thirty-some years in the sport. The 17LT was one of the earliest variations of the original Chesapeake 17 model. We took the Chesapeake 17's beautiful lines and trimmed about 20% of the volume out of the hull for a sleeker, low-windage hull with the same great speed and tracking of the original. In a nutshell, the Chesapeake 17LT is a terrific all-round sea kayak, combining stability and cockpit comfort with above-average speed. Of our many kayaks, the 17LT has the broadest paddler weight range. Folks from about 130 pounds all of the way up to around 220 pounds will be able to paddle the 17LT in all conditions.
This CLC 17LT was built approximately ten years ago by a professional boatbuilder in Connecticut (whose name is lost to time, as I’m the second owner). It was meticulously constructed and has been carefully used and maintained. There are a few bottom scratches and abrasions from honest use over the years, and I’ve tried to show those in photos. There are absolutely no major dings, however, and the varnished marine plywood still looks bright and fresh. I can’t imagine anyone being displeased with condition.
Also included:Redfish Custom Kayak Seat ($175 new) which I had custom fit for this kayak. Ultra comfortable! New / never used Brooks Neoprene Cockpit Cover ($65) which covers the entire cockpit when the kayak is not in use.New / never used Brooks Neoprene Sprayskirt (~$150) which connects you snugly and dryly to the kayak, especially during cool weather. I think that there are two of these available with slightly different styling(?)Used Brooks Nylon Half-Skirt ($40) which is incredibly useful in warm weather.Assorted accessories, like hand pump, paddle float, life preserver. NOT included, however, is a paddle, unless you’re interested in one or more of my Cricket Inuit (Greenland style) paddles.
Just a warning that they’re somewhat custom fit and a little pricey. At my asking price of $1250, you could buy the CLC kit and cover shipping. It would arrive with a 180-page assembly manual and require about 80 hours of semi-skilled labor. It would obviously not include roughly $500 in extras. Given this, I’m hoping that someone will be motivated to act and enjoy the rest of the summer on the water in this beautiful kayak.
Its current location is the southern end of Greenwood Lake in Hewitt (West Milford) in Passaic County, New Jersey. You’re welcome to make arrangements with me to come and pick up the kayak on a weekend. I’m also willing to deliver it within a reasonable distance of this location, including into NYC or Nassau County. I’m not all that excited to ship it, though, unless you’re willing to make all arrangements for pick-up and to take responsibility from there. In addition, in-person transactions should really be cash-only in order to keep everything above board.
I’m sure there will be questions! Feel free to get in touch, and I’ll do my best to get you any other information you need. Good luck!
